Description
The Zulu is the modern Wiley X — the one-frame answer if you’re going to commit to a single tactical-grade pair for everything. Slightly more aggressive than the Saint, slightly less aggressive than the JAKL, and Rx-ready with a ground-in prescription cut directly into the lens. Removable side shields, wire-core temples, $180.
Where the Zulu fits in the Wiley X tactical line
Wiley X has built tactical sunglasses for two-plus decades, and the lineup has split into specialized roles. The Saint is the conservative everyday tactical frame. The JAKL is the deep-coverage shield-cut for aggressive field use. The Saber Advanced is the wider-fit changeable-lens kit for shooting sports. The Founder is the bold-silhouette statement frame. The Zulu fills the ‘modern, balanced, all-around’ slot — the frame for buyers who want one Wiley X that handles duty wear, the commute, and the Saturday-afternoon range without committing to a dedicated tactical look. It’s not the best frame for any single use case; it’s the best single frame for buyers who don’t want multiple frames.
Why the ground-in Rx capability matters here
The JAKL and Saber Advanced are aggressive shields — too curved for a ground-in prescription cut, which is why those frames require the PTX insert. The Zulu’s lens curvature is more moderate. That means the prescription is cut directly into the lens material rather than added behind the lens via insert. Practical advantages: no insert maintenance, no double-pane reflection issues, and a cleaner aesthetic because the prescription is invisible inside the lens. For full-time prescription wearers who want a tactical-grade frame, ground-in Rx is the preferred architecture.
How the prescription work happens
Every Zulu prescription is cut at our US optical lab. Single-vision, bifocal, and progressive prescriptions are all supported. Polycarbonate is the standard lens material — covers most working-adult scripts. Trivex is the lighter-weight alternative. High-index 1.67 is available for stronger Rx where edge thickness matters. Tints — clear, smoke-grey, polarized smoke — are pour-cut into the lens during fabrication rather than coated after, which is why the colors don’t degrade with cleaning. Anti-reflective and anti-fog coatings are optional add-ons.

Product Q&A
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Zulu different from the Saint, JAKL, or Founder in the same Wiley X tactical line?
The Zulu is the modern hybrid in the line — slightly more aggressive wrap than the Saint, slightly less aggressive than the JAKL, and a balanced silhouette that reads more contemporary than the Founder. Its design intent is to bridge the gap between everyday-wear sunglasses and dedicated tactical eyewear. If you want one Wiley X that serves duty + commute + Saturday range, the Zulu is the most balanced option in the current lineup.
Does it ship with side shields?
Yes — removable, with the captive-track attachment used across the Wiley X tactical line. With the shields installed, the configuration carries OSHA 1910.133 lateral-protection compliance. With them removed, the frame is still ANSI Z87.1+ rated for frontal impact — wearable as everyday eyewear without obvious safety-frame markers. The shields slide out without tools and reattach in 10 seconds.
Is the Zulu prescription-ready?
Yes — and unlike the JAKL and Saber Advanced, the Zulu accepts a ground-in prescription cut directly into the lens. The lens curvature is moderate enough to support a clean prescription pour without distortion, which means no PTX insert is required. Single-vision, bifocal, and progressive prescriptions are all supported. Polycarbonate handles most working-adult scripts; high-index 1.67 is available for stronger Rx. FSA/HSA eligibility applies to the prescription configuration.
What's the price-to-value math at $180?
At $180 you’re getting Selenite polycarbonate lenses (the Wiley X tactical-grade material), the captive-track removable shield system, the wire-core temple architecture used across the Wiley X tactical line, and a frame that reads contemporary enough for off-duty wear. The Saint at a similar price point is more conservative; the JAKL at a similar price is more aggressive. The Zulu is in the sweet spot if you’re going to wear one tactical-grade frame for everything.
Is the Zulu compatible with helmets, earmuffs, and other PPE?
Yes. The wire-core temples reshape by hand for fit, and the temple-tip profile is designed to clear hard-hat suspension and over-ear muffs without breaking the seal. The removable shield kit is flush to the lens housing rather than projecting outward, which means a face shield can close over the frame without catching. In-ear comms work without modification because the temples are slim where they meet the head.
