Are these the same Det Cord that the military issues?

The Oakley Standard Issue Det Cord PPE is the prescription-ready industrial variant of the same frame Oakley supplies through its Standard Issue program. The frame geometry, the impact-rated lens material, and the comms-compatible thin temple architecture are identical. Where this version diverges is the Rx-cut lens housing — Oakley engineered the inner curve specifically to accept prescription lenses without distorting the optical centers, which is why this PPE-spec model exists as a separate SKU.

What's the difference between the OO9253-2161 SKU and the regular Det Cord?

The 2161 colorway is the matte black PPE configuration with clear Plutonite lenses, side cup vents, and the standard removable side shield kit. The non-PPE Det Cord ships without the lateral protection package and is sold as a sport/lifestyle model. The 2161 carries the ANSI Z87.1 marking on the temple and the Z87+ marking on the lens — both are required for OSHA-compliant industrial use.

How thin can my prescription lenses be in this frame?

Plenty thin — that’s one of the reasons people pick this frame for Rx. The lens housing accepts polycarbonate, Trivex, and high-index 1.67 materials. For prescriptions up to roughly +/-4.00 sphere with cylinder up to -2.00, polycarbonate is the right call (lightest, ANSI-rated, lowest cost). Above that, high-index 1.67 keeps the edge thickness in proportion with the slim Det Cord profile so the glasses still look like glasses, not safety goggles.

Are they comms-compatible — do they work with earpieces and over-ear PPE?

Yes. The temple thickness and the unobstructed pivot path were designed for in-ear comms and standard earmuff PPE. The temple tip clears most over-ear cup geometries without breaking the seal, and the wire-core grip lets you angle the temple slightly upward if you wear a hard hat or low-profile helmet. If you run a face shield over the frame, the Det Cord profile is one of the few Rx-rated frames that doesn’t push the shield off-spec.

Will my FSA or HSA cover them?

Yes — when ordered with prescription lenses, the Det Cord PPE qualifies as a medical device under both FSA and HSA accounts. We supply an itemized receipt automatically with every Rx order. If you’re submitting to a vision insurance plan instead, most VSP, EyeMed, and Davis plans will reimburse out-of-network on receipt; we don’t bill the carrier directly, but the receipt has the codes your administrator needs.
