Uvex Prescription Safety glasses

Description

The Avatar RX is the Uvex Rx frame that doesn’t fog. The patented indirect venting routes warm exhaled air around the outside of the lens instead of letting it hit the inner surface — same effect a continuously running anti-fog spray gives you, but engineered into the frame so you don’t have to maintain it. Lightweight, prescription-cut, and hard-hat compatible.

Why this is the frame for hot, humid, and high-exertion work

Fogging is the unsolved problem of safety eyewear. Anti-fog coatings degrade with cleaning. Anti-fog sprays need re-application every couple of hours. Both fail when you ramp up sweat output or move into a humidity-heavy environment. Uvex’s indirect-venting design takes a structural approach instead: the lens housing has narrow vent paths along the upper and lower edges that route warm air around the outside surface of the lens before it can condense on the inside. The result is a frame that stays clear in conditions where coated frames fog repeatedly. It’s why Avatar RX shows up as the standard frame in many emergency-response and field-medical PPE kits.

Wire-core temples — what ‘adjustable’ actually means here

Most temples on safety frames are rigid plastic. They fit whoever the frame’s median fitting was designed for and nobody else. The Avatar RX runs a malleable wire spine through the temple core, which means you can shape the temple by hand and the frame holds the form. Practically, that’s how you get a frame that grips your specific head shape: bend slightly inward at the tip to grip behind the ear, or angle slightly upward to clear a hard-hat suspension. Once shaped, the wire core retains the form through everyday wear and cleaning. It’s not floppy memory metal; it’s structural shape retention.

How the prescription work happens

Every Avatar RX prescription is cut at our US optical lab. Single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses are all available in polycarbonate, Trivex, or high-index 1.67. Tints — clear, smoke-grey, polarized smoke, or a contrast tint — are pour-cut into the lens during fabrication rather than coated on after, which is why the colors don’t degrade with cleaning. Anti-reflective and anti-fog coatings are optional add-ons at the customize step, though the frame’s structural venting means anti-fog coating is rarely necessary on this model.

Product Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the indirect venting on the Avatar, and why does it matter?

Most safety glasses fog because warm exhaled air hits the cool lens surface from below. Uvex’s patented indirect venting design routes that warm air around the lens edge instead of letting it hit the inner surface. In a hot/humid environment — kitchen, lab, summer construction — that’s the difference between needing anti-fog every 20 minutes and being able to keep your head down and work. It’s also why this frame is used by emergency responders and field medical crews.

Are the wire-core temples adjustable on demand?

Yes — that’s the second Uvex design fingerprint on this frame. The temples have a malleable wire spine that you can re-shape by hand to match your head. Typical use case: bend the tips slightly inward to grip behind the ears, or angle them slightly upward to clear a hard hat or low-profile helmet. Once shaped, the temples hold the form. They’re not floppy; the wire core gives you adjustment plus retention.

How is the Avatar different from other ultralight Uvex frames?

The Avatar is the lifestyle-Rx flagship in the Uvex line — premium fit-and-finish, cleaner aesthetic than the entry-level Uvex industrial frames. If you want a frame that reads as a normal pair of glasses but carries the same ANSI Z87.1 certification you’d get on a heavier industrial chassis, this is the pick. It’s also the only Uvex Rx frame with the indirect venting at this price tier.

Can I get prescription sunglasses in this frame?

Yes. At the customize-lens step, choose your preferred tint — smoke-grey for general daylight, polarized smoke for water and driving, or a mid-tone contrast for variable conditions. Tints are applied during the lens cut, so the prescription and the tint are matched in a single pour rather than added as a coating. The Avatar’s lens housing accepts polarized cuts cleanly because the frame’s wraparound angle is moderate rather than extreme.

Does it work with hard hats and over-ear PPE?

Yes. The lightweight chassis and the wire-core temple adjustment are specifically designed for use with hard hats and over-ear hearing protection. Most users tune the temple angle slightly upward to clear the hard-hat suspension, then leave the form set. The flexible nose pads handle the slight downward force from a face shield without crushing.

Quality good, Fit is still kind of small (-1 star)
This is my second pair from Safety Gear, I like the Quality but I struggle and don't feel I have been help when I emailed or talked to reps about how to tell if it is going to fit my face. I sent the first one back because the fit (specifically the Lense was small and restricted my peripheral vision) was too small. I was effectively told that the only thing was to send it back for a partial refund and try again, I asked the rep if they could help me figure out what to get and they were willing but acted like it was an imposition to help me with this. I ended up ordering this one but I didn't bother asking for help again. Good product but customer service could use improvement.
