The WX Citadel is built for those who push limits. Its toric design follows the natural shape of the eye for sharp, distortion-free vision. Pivoting side shields and a durable, lightweight frame offer adaptable protection in any environment. High-traction rubber on the nose and temples keeps the fit locked in, even at full speed. Interchangeable, shatterproof lenses let you adjust to changing light in seconds. Tough, precise, and built to perform, the WX Citadel will never back down.

Description

Wiley X Citadel Toric Interchangeable Lens Tactical Sunglasses

Toric distortion-free lens geometry · 3-lens CAPTIVATE™ kit · ANSI Z87.1+ & Military Ballistic Certified

WHY TORIC LENS GEOMETRY MATTERS MORE THAN THE SPEC SOUNDS

Most wraparound sunglass lenses are spherical — single curvature in all directions. The human eye is not spherical; it has subtly different curvatures along the horizontal and vertical axes. The mismatch between spherical lenses and toric eyes introduces optical distortion at peripheral edges, where the lens curve diverges from the eye curve most strongly. For sedentary use, the distortion is minor, and most users don’t notice. For active tactical and sport use that requires precision peripheral scanning — tracking moving targets, reading instruments at the edge of visual field, scanning a perimeter — the peripheral distortion forces head-tilt-to-clear and costs precision. Toric lenses match the eye’s actual geometry, eliminating that distortion. The Citadel is one of the few tactical wraparounds engineered with toric lenses across the full kit.

HOW THE 3-LENS KIT COVERS REAL ENVIRONMENT TRANSITIONS

Three CAPTIVATE-tuned lenses cover the most common environment transitions for tactical and outdoor use. Grey is the daylight default — drops about 15% transmission and kills the highway-haze and open-sun glare that bleach out distant detail. Clear is for low-light, indoor range, dusk-to-dawn transitions, and night driving. Light Rust is the contrast-tuning lens for variable conditions — tree-line shooting, overcast outdoor, indoor-fluorescent range, mixed-shadow tactical environments where neither bright-tint nor clear is right. All three lenses carry the same Wiley X certification stack, and the swap mechanism is engineered so the certification holds across swaps. For full-time interchangeable-lens users, the Citadel kit covers the typical environment range from one frame.

HOW CAPTIVATE DIFFERS FROM GENERIC CONTRAST LENSES

CAPTIVATE is Wiley X’s contrast-enhancement system — wavelength filtering tuned by Wiley X for tactical and outdoor use cases. Standard contrast lenses brighten everything in their target wavelength range, which can over-saturate certain colors. CAPTIVATE tunes the filtering more precisely: pulls specific wavelengths forward (reds and oranges for warmth, useful for distinguishing wildlife and targets against backgrounds) without over-brightening the surrounding spectrum. The result is contrast enhancement that feels natural rather than aggressive. The CAPTIVATE tuning is built into the lens during fabrication rather than added as a degradable coating.

Product Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's a 'toric lens' and why does it matter?

A toric lens has subtly different curvatures along the horizontal and vertical axes, engineered to match the curvature of the human eye more precisely than a single-curvature spherical lens. The practical effect is distortion-free vision across the full lens — particularly at the peripheral edges where standard wraparound lenses introduce optical distortion. For the Citadel, the toric design means clear vision corner-to-corner without the head-tilt-to-clear that lower-quality wraparounds force.

Q: What's in the 3-lens interchangeable kit?

Three CAPTIVATE-tuned lenses ship in the Citadel kit: grey for bright-light conditions (highway driving, open daylight, sustained sun), clear for low-light and indoor use (night, indoor range, dawn/dusk transitions), and Light Rust for medium and variable lighting (tree-line, overcast, cloudy outdoor, mixed indoor/outdoor transitions). All three are toric, all carry the Wiley X cert stack, and they swap by hand without tools.

Q: How does the Citadel compare to the Wiley X Saber Advanced lens kit?

Both ship with interchangeable lens systems and CAPTIVATE-style contrast tuning. The Saber Advanced’s kit is the long-running Wiley X tactical kit with smoke / contrast / clear options; the Citadel’s kit is the new toric-lens kit with the same three-environment tuning but the more advanced toric lens geometry. For full-time interchangeable-lens users, the Citadel’s toric lenses provide cleaner peripheral optics; for buyers who already own and like the Saber Advanced, the upgrade isn’t dramatic.

Q: What's the certification stack on the Citadel?

ANSI Z87.1+ for US industrial high-velocity impact on all configurations. Most Citadel SKUs also carry the MIL-PRF-32432A ballistic certification — the .15 caliber V0 ballistic test used as the spec for US military ground-troop spectacle eyewear. IMPORTANT: The Blue Mirror Lens SKUs have not been certified as MIL-PRF-32432A, yet.  Specifically, SKUs: CHCTD29, CITADEL-09, CITADEL-19.

Q: Is it Rx-ready?

No. The Wiley X Citadel is a dedicated, non-prescription ballistic shield. Unlike some other Wiley X tactical models, it does not support internal prescription (Rx) inserts, nor can it be fitted with custom ground-in prescription lenses. It is designed to be worn strictly as a non-prescription safety shield.
