Description
ANSI Z87.1+ · MIL-PRF-32432 ballistic-rated · 3 Selenite lenses included · Rx-ready via PTX insert
The JAKL is the deepest peripheral wrap in the current Wiley X tactical lineup. Three Selenite lenses live in the kit — smoke, clear, and a contrast lens — so one pair of sunglasses covers from desert glare to dusk to a clear-lens night ride. ANSI Z87.1+ and MIL-PRF-32432 ballistic-rated across every lens swap.
Most tactical sunglasses are wraparound but not shield-cut. The difference shows up the second you turn your head. A standard wrap protects what’s directly in front of you; a shield-cut lens like the JAKL’s extends the field of clear optics into your peripheral vision, where projectile, debris, and dust come from when you’re moving. The Selenite polycarbonate keeps the optical clarity edge-to-edge, and the wire-core temples hold the shield seated when you’re actually working — moving, kneeling, leaning over a long gun, or angling around a sight.
The smoke-grey lens is the daylight default — drops about 15% transmission and kills the sky-haze glare that bleaches out a target acquisition. The light-rust or vermillion contrast lens is the conditional pick: tree line, overcast, dusk, indoor range under fluorescent. It pulls red and orange wavelengths forward, which makes muzzles, ranges flags, and steel pop against a green or grey background. The clear lens is for everything else: indoor, night, fluorescent, evening drive home. All three swap by hand without tools and click into the frame at the same six contact points, which is why the certification holds across swaps.
The JAKL doesn’t take ground-in Rx lenses — its shield geometry won’t cooperate with a prescription cut. Wiley X solved that with the PTX insert, an optical carrier that lives between your eyes and the shield. The insert is what carries your prescription — single-vision, bifocal, or progressive — and the shield in front of it stays the certified ballistic lens. The result is a single frame that’s tinted-day / clear-night / Rx-corrected, FSA/HSA-eligible, and never out of certification when you swap lenses.

Product Q&A
Frequently Asked Questions about the Wiley X JAKL
Are the JAKL Rx-ready, or are they sunglasses-only?
Both paths exist. The JAKL is sold most often as a sunglasses-and-changeable-lens kit, but every JAKL order can be configured with the Wiley X PTX prescription insert at the customize-lens step — that’s a separate optical carrier that sits behind the main shield and accepts your script in single-vision, bifocal, or progressive form. The advantage of the insert architecture is that you keep the full-coverage ballistic shield outside and the prescription geometry inside, so swapping lens tints doesn’t change your Rx alignment.
What lenses come in the kit?
The standard JAKL kit ships with three Selenite polycarbonate lenses: smoke-grey for bright-light glare reduction, clear for nighttime and indoor work, and either light-rust or vermillion depending on the colorway you select — both are mid-tone contrast lenses optimized for tree-line or low-light conditions. All three lenses meet ANSI Z87.1+ and MIL-PRF-32432 ballistic spec; you don’t lose certification when you swap.
How does the JAKL compare to other Wiley X tactical sunglasses (Saber Advanced, Saint, Founder)?
The JAKL is the most aggressive wrap in the current Wiley X tactical line — deeper coverage at the temples, more aggressive cheek wrap, and a shield-style lens geometry that makes it the obvious pick for shooting sports, off-road, and desert work. The Saber Advanced is closer to a sport-tactical hybrid; the Saint is a balanced everyday tactical shape; the Founder is a heavier, more boxed silhouette built for show-of-force visibility. Pick the JAKL when peripheral coverage matters more than fashion.
Are these compatible with motorcycle helmet use?
Yes — that’s part of why the JAKL exists. The high-wrap shield and the streamlined temple geometry slide cleanly under a full-face or modular helmet without catching on the cheek pad. The frame stays seated when you reach across to your mirror. The clear lens makes the same kit ready for night riding without a separate pair of glasses.
Are JAKL FSA/HSA eligible?
When ordered as the prescription configuration with the PTX insert, yes — FSA and HSA both treat prescription protective eyewear as a medical device. Sunglasses-only configurations are not FSA/HSA eligible by IRS rules. The customize-lens step at checkout will tell you which configuration you’re in; the receipt automatically includes the codes your plan administrator needs.
