Description

The OG220S is the dual-cert OnGuard with removable shields. Same ANSI + CSA certification stack as the OG225S, same prescription range, but the side shields slide out without tools when the day’s work doesn’t require lateral protection. The frame that doesn’t have to commit to one mode.

Why removable shields exist as a separate product line

OnGuard’s industrial product line includes both removable-shield (OG220S) and integrated-shield (OG225S) frames in nearly identical chassis because the right answer depends on the operational context. Removable shields make sense when a single wearer’s day spans multiple environments — site visit in the morning (lateral protection required), lab analysis in the afternoon (lateral protection optional), drive home wearing the frame as everyday eyewear (no shields needed). Integrated shields make sense when compliance has to hold no matter what — high-audit environments, regulated industries, anywhere the workforce can’t be trusted to keep optional gear in place. The OG220S is the answer to the first scenario.

What dual ANSI/CSA certification gets you in practice

ANSI Z87.1 is the US impact spec; CSA Z94.3 is the Canadian equivalent. Each has its own specific test parameters — different ball-drop velocities, different acceptable shield architectures, different required markings. Most US-only safety frames carry only the ANSI mark, which causes a procurement headache when the company operates crews in Canada. The OG220S’s dual marking eliminates that headache: one frame, one SKU, two regulatory regimes. For cross-border contractors, oil-and-gas operators, mining, and any business where crews move between US and Canadian sites, the dual cert is the entire reason this frame exists.

Prescription range and lens options

Polycarbonate is the standard lens material — covers single-vision prescriptions to roughly +/-6.00 sphere with cylinder up to -3.00, which fits over 90% of working-adult prescriptions. Trivex is available for buyers who want lighter weight and a higher Abbe number (less chromatic distortion). High-index 1.67 is supported for stronger prescriptions. Anti-reflective and anti-fog coatings are optional add-ons at the customize-lens step. Bifocal and progressive prescriptions are both supported.

Product Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the OG220S different from the OG225S in the same OnGuard line?

Same dual cert (ANSI Z87.1 + CSA Z94.3), same prescription range, same lens-material options. The difference is the shield architecture: the OG220S has removable side shields that slide out of a captive track, while the OG225S has integrated shields molded into the frame. Pick the OG220S if the wearer needs a frame that doubles as off-shift eyewear or sees variable lateral-protection requirements during a shift. Pick the OG225S if you want shields that can’t be removed and lost.

How are the shields attached — what stops them from coming off in impact?

The shields use a captive-pin retention system rather than a friction clip. The pin engages with a spring detent in the temple, which holds the shield through normal motion but allows manual removal with thumb pressure. ANSI testing confirms the shields stay attached through the high-impact ball-drop test when properly seated. The trade-off compared to molded shields: if a worker removes the shields during a shift and the safety officer audits the workstation, compliance is at risk. Operational discipline matters with this shield architecture.

What sizes does it ship in?

Medium and Large — narrower coverage than the OG225S’s Small/Medium/Large. The medium fits PDs in the 60–67 mm range (most adult fittings); the large fits PDs above 68 mm or broader temple-to-temple measurements. If you have a smaller-faced wearer or PDs under 60 mm, the OG225S is the better starting point because it offers the small size.

Can it be ordered without the shields if my work doesn't need them?

Yes — when the lateral-protection requirement doesn’t apply, the OG220S can be ordered with the shields removed for a cleaner aesthetic. The frame still carries the ANSI Z87.1 high-impact certification on the frame itself and the Z87+ on the lens. What you lose without shields is OSHA 1910.133 lateral-protection compliance, which matters for industrial environments but not for general lab, healthcare, or office-adjacent technical work.

Is it FSA/HSA eligible?

Yes when ordered with prescription lenses. The OG220S configured as prescription safety glasses qualifies as a medical-device purchase under both FSA and HSA rules. We provide an itemized receipt automatically with every Rx order. Frames Only or non-prescription configurations are not eligible because they don’t qualify as a medical-device purchase under IRS rules.
